No ideas original
There’s nothing new under the sun
It’s never what you do
But how its done

Sampling is the act of reusing a portion of a sound recording. It could be anything from a piece of a song to the audio from a scene of a move or even a snippet of a meme video clip on social media.
Being inspired at a young age by sample producers like DJ Premier, Pete Rock, RZA, 9th Wonder, The Alchemist, Kanye, & Just Blaze shed light on a music production technique the sent me on a musical journey through sound.
It started with trying to find out HOW to even sample. Those were days before YouTube University and I didn’t have any mentors around me who were even close to being or music producers or beatmakers. I came across a cracked version of the Fruity Loops software and started sampling downloaded files from limewire and other file sharing programs. All I could dream of was getting an MPC to sample with and getting those coveted drum pads, but moms wasn’t springing for those funds so software equivalents were all I was left with.
The journey of finding sounds from all over the world and in different time periods has broadened my perspective on what music can become, especially when you sample from vinyl records. Finding sounds you’ve never experienced and hearing instruments you’ve never heard before is euphoric and intriguing. Being able to chop the audio clips up, adding effects and manipulating the sound into something different, then crafting a collage combined of those pieces allows me to further exercise my song composition skills.
Sampling vintage records allows me to, in a sense, work with musicians of the past to create new music. It gives a feeling of being a modern day Hip Hop “esque”, Beethovenish composer of sound.
Follow me through some of my journeys through sample digging and then utilizing those sounds to make music on my show “Can You Dig It” out now on YouTube.
